The dogs were delicious, the games were great and everybody had a terrific time. Wednesday June 9th, BBBS of Saskatoon hosted our annual Day of Caring BBQ.
As is becoming somewhat of a tradition rain moved the event indoors for the third year in a row. But there was no dampening spirits as we gathered at City Park Colegiate to spend some time with our supporters, volunteers, families and Littles.
A Big thanks goes out to everybody who attended. But we are especially grateful to the staff of Areva Resources Canada. They helped make this year's BBQ the Biggest success ever. They brought out some great games and prizes for our Littles and even dished out the dogs to the hungry crowd. Thanks to the Areva team of Rebecca, Richard, Cindy, Nestor, Linda, Veronique, Pam and Alejandra. Their enthusiasm and energy were off the charts and made it a great day for the kids.
As always, Big thanks is also owed to SaskEnergy. They supplied their big BBQ Truck and their expert griller Randy was on hand to put the heat to the meat.
We also couldn't have had such a great day without the help of Canada Safeway- Confederation, Culligan Water Matters, Maple Leaf Foods, Old Dutch Foods, Weston Bakeries, Page One Printing and of course the staff at City Park Colegiate for opening their doors and gym to us as the rain pelted down outside.
The Events Team at Big Brothers Big Sisters has been super busy putting together a great line up of exciting events for March and April.
Look To The Stars! On March 12th we'll be visiting the Observatory at the U of S. There's no cost for this event and it will run from 8 until 9:30 weather permitting. If you'd like to sign up call Matt here at the office at 244-8197 or email reception@bbbssaskatoon.org.
On March 25th we'll be holding an Interactive Stunt Workshop presented by Flicks Film Festival for Young People. Again, there's no cost. The registration deadline is March 22nd. Call the office to sign up.
Then on March 29th, get ready for some Easter Eggcitement with out annual Easter Egg Hunt and Craft party. The hunting starts that night at 7:15 sharp. Give us a call to register.
Finally, we have some exciting news for April. We will be doing a special photo shoot for matches. Lots of details coming so so keep checking back.
A Big thanks goes out to Sangster's Health Centres. They gave us a call and have donated a bunch of tickets to the World Junior Hockey Championships. Thanks to Sangster's and all the other companies and indivduals who donated tickets we have a bunch of Littles that will be able to attend this historic event.
As always, the people of Saskatoon and all our supporters in the business community have humbled us with their giving hearts this Holiday Season.
Big Congrats to "Scissor Sisters." Winners of the first ever Big Brothers Big Sisters Rock Paper Scissors Challenge.
The Sisters are a team of local CIBC employees with one BBBS staffer added for good luck. They rolled through the Championship round without losing a game. Defeating the Clean Brite Commandos 15-11 in the final.
For the Commandos it was a bitter defeat. They were the Night One winners back on September 9th and came oh so close to taking home the big prize.
We'd like to thank everybody that made BBBS Rock Paper Scissors such a Big success. Over the four nights we had more than 100 players. Those people and the people that supported them through pledges have our heartfelt gratitude.
We'd also like to thank everybody that helped out. RPS committe members Kate Sorestad, Karen Parhar and Brent Blazieko. Also, all the BBBS staffers that came out each evening to help out at the event.
Finally we'd like to thank all of the local businesses that contributed to the success of this event.
Paper Sponsors Affinity Credit Union.
Scissors Sponsors, Round One Champions, and Best Loser plate winners Clean Brite Cleaners.
WestJet and Marlin Travel. These two companies teamed up to supply a trip for two to Las Vegas for our top individual fundraiser. Not only that but they both sent super fun teams to the competition. The WestJet team romped through Night Three to win it all. Then in the Finals finished fourth. Definately a skilled RPS outfit.
Rawlco Radio. Who supplied a lot of radio support to the event and some great prizes too. There support made a Big difference in attracting teams and it was great to have them on board.
Erotic Encounter Boutique. Not only was their staff team a fan favourite during Round Three and the Championship Final but they also supplied a terrific gift package for the Round One best uniform winners.
Sun Sera Salons. Suppliers of the best uniform prize package for Round Two.
And Joes Sports Bar and Grill. Those guys proved to be great hosts for the event. For four nights in Septmber they let us come in and move their tables around, mess with their sound system and just generally make a nuisance of ourselves. Errin and his staff were great to us and they even chipped in with a whole bunch of prizes. Thanks guys!
We would also like to thanks Rylys Canadian Nightclub for donating free pub crawls for our top fundraising University teams.
Sasktel for donating NHL pre-season tickets for our Night Two winners Wacky Westmount.
Mistown Plaza and Underground Skates for donating prizes.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders for sending us Andy Fantusz and Weston Dressler signed hats to give away.
The Downtown Business Partnership for putting our posters up around downtown and the USSU for doing the same on campus
Jeff Rogstad and the crew at CTV Saskatoon for doing a story on us. And Colleen Wilson at Global for having us on to talk about the event.
Crystal Anderson and her Good On Paper team evn organized a steak night to raise money for their team. Thanks to them and everybody that supported their event.
Final totals are still to come but all of you did a great job raising money for the children of Saskatoon. Everybody that contriubted to this effort has the sincere thanks of our organization!
Most importantly of all, everybody that participated had a great time. We're already working on some ideas for next year with the goal of making the 2nd Ever Big Brothers Big Sisters Rock Paper Scissors Challenge even bigger and better.
Fundraising prizes will be determined in the days to come. Winners of the Vegas trip from West Jet and Marlin Travel and the high end camping package will be notified shortly.
